Describing Hammersmith Bridge as now “working by accident, the Green Party’s candidate for Mayor of London Zoë Garbett commits to keeping Hammersmith Bridge for people walking and cycling as well as bus services.
Visiting Hammersmith Bridge today, Zoë spoke to local campaigners and people using the bridge, seeing how it’s working in action.
This follows years of chaos where the Labour Mayor of London has failed to find a solution with Hammersmith and Fulham Council to identify the funding needed to secure the future of the bridge.
The cost of completing the repairs to a standard where Hammersmith Bridge could be reopened to motor traffic is estimated at £250m.
Speaking on Hammersmith Bridge, Zoë Garbett said:
“Labour have overseen a multi-year debacle on Hammersmith Bridge, costing London hundreds of millions of pounds. The only reason they give for this is a refusal to prioritise any type of travel other than motor traffic.
“But right now, Hammersmith Bridge is being used by residents, commuters, people walking and cycling, serving them better than ever before. By accident, Labour has now got this bridge working. By design, they are intent on ruining it once again, by giving it back to the drivers despite the climate and air pollution crises.
“Greens see this differently. As Mayor, I would simply save the £250m and keep Hammersmith Bridge for people walking, wheeling and cycling. I would be much more ambitious, investing in the infrastructure not only to make cycling safer for those that already cycle but also to encourage even more people to use bikes., walking and wheeling to get around our city.
Greens back permanently designating Hammersmith Bridge for walking, wheeling and cycling, and will explore options for innovative public transport services if bus use cannot be restored, saving an estimated £250 million after years of delay and increasing costs.
Zoë Garbett is running for London Mayor alongside a slate of Green candidates for the London Assembly.
