Hackney councillor Zoë Garbett is today launching her campaign to be the next Green Party candidate for Mayor of London in 2024, promising to amplify Londoners’ voices on issues ignored by other parties, and to act on injustice and inequality.
Her candidacy is backed by a strong field of leading Greens including:
Zoë has built up a strong record in recent elections. She won second place ahead of the Conservatives and Lib Dems, with a record 17 percent of the vote for Hackney Mayor in May 2022, and is now the opposition group leader on Hackney Council.
She also took the lead on developing the party’s widely praised manifesto for the 2021 Londonwide elections and new national drug harm reduction policies, passed by Greens in 2019.
Zoë lives in her council ward of Dalston in Hackney, and in her professional life she has worked in the public sector in inner and outer London for over ten years, working now as a senior commissioner in the NHS, leading on work to address health inequalities.
Councillor Zoë Garbett says:
“Londoners need to be heard, with more control over their lives and real support to thrive. We need action which tackles widening inequality and injustice, keeps communities together and protects nature. We will never ignore these issues and have the policies to help. I’m proud of the work I’ve done in Hackney and I’m ready to do the same for the whole city. I’m ready to lead a winning campaign which will resonate with Londoners and result in big wins for the Green Party.”
Siân Berry AM says:
“Greens have always brought fresh and powerful voices into the London elections, and Zoë is a genuine star who will continue that tradition. Our 2024 London Mayor candidate needs to have both a strong record in elections and a clear vision for practical policies to help Londoners thrive, and Zoë has these in spades. She has been so impressive as a warm and dedicated colleague, leader and candidate in recent elections, and I can’t wait to see what she achieves in the race for London Mayor.”
Caroline Lucas MP says:
“I’ve seen first-hand just what a phenomenal campaigner she is when I was on the doorsteps with her in Hackney. She can mobilise volunteers from far and wide. You don’t say no to Zoë. She’s got a wonderful grip on policy and she’s an amazing communicator. Zoë would be a wonderful candidate for Mayor – please support her.”
Zoë’s campaign for Hackney Mayor in 2022 achieved the highest Green vote in a directly elected Mayor contest outside the Bristol area, where Greens are expecting to win a further MP at the next General Election.
London Greens are mobilising for their most high profile campaign yet. In 2021 the party achieved record results in both the Mayor and Assembly elections, and the 2022 council elections saw breakthroughs on to new councils in Croydon, Newham, and Tower Hamlets, and the first two Hackney councillors elected for sixteen years.
Zoë won the vote of 63 per cent of residents in Dalston in May and, since then, Hackney Greens have continued their momentum, coming within 30 votes of winning a by-election this summer in De Beauvoir ward, with Tyrone Scott as their candidate and an 18 per cent swing to the party.
The next London elections for Mayor and Assembly take place in May 2024. The selection process for Green candidates is scheduled to open in November and run until the end of January 2023.
Current Green Assembly members, Siân Berry and Caroline Russell will also be joining Zoë in standing for selection as London Assembly candidates when nominations open.
