Describing misogyny’s lack of recognition as negligent, the London Greens’ women and non-binary people candidates discussed the problems and solutions with Londoners.
The Green candidate for Mayor of London joined women and non-binary Green London Assembly candidates to talk to people in Stratford today. Listening to commuters and shoppers, they heard about women’s experiences of violence and abuse on the public transport network in London, and generally across the city.
Green candidate for Mayor of London Zoë Garbett said:
“People are shocked when they find out that crimes motivated by hating women are somehow not considered hate crimes. This significant gap amounts to negligence.
“A Green Mayor will treat misogyny as a hate crime, instructing the Met police to record , and treat more seriously, crimes that are motivated by or worsened by hatred for women.
“London is a city where women should be and feel safe. From women commuting facing sexual harassment, to trans women having their humanity denied, to Black and Brown women-led businesses and services facing particularly tough challenges; women need a Mayor who they can count on.”
As well as adopting the model of Nottinghamshire to treat hating women as a hate crime, Greens pledge to institute an urgent victim-led review of sexual violence in London, intergrate this into all training of police and TfL staff, and commit that the initiatives from the Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Consortium are fully funded to meet the needs of survivors of violence and those facing domestic violence.
Zoë Garbett is running for London Mayor alongside a slate of Green candidates for the London Assembly, a majority of whom are women and non-binary people.
