According to the UN “Nuclear weapons are the most dangerous weapons on earth… One can destroy a whole city, potentially killing millions, and jeopardizing the natural environment and lives of future generations through its long-term catastrophic effects. The dangers from such weapons arise from their very existence.” That is just one, yet there are thousands and we are at constant risk from devastating accident – let alone deliberate use.
As Mayor I will see that Hackney Council joins a growing list of Nuclear Ban Communities.
I will work with the Pensions Committee to remove any obstacles to the total divestment of the council’s pension fund from companies involved in the testing and manufacture of nuclear weapons.
Under my leadership, Hackney Council will declare its support for the United Nations ‘Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons’ – The Ban Treaty. This is an historic treaty which prohibits its signatories from developing, testing and using nuclear weapons.
I recognise the urgent necessity of creating a world free from nuclear weapons and will denounce the United Kingdom Government’s refusal to sign or ratify this landmark treaty.
